Don’t worry about your home while you are away! Before you leave home for a vacation this summer, know that your home is as protected as you can before you leave. Follow these simple steps:
Read through your fire insurance and put the account information in your cell phone.
Mow the lawn and arrange for it to be mowed if you are away for a long time.
Rake leaves and grass clippings before you go.
Turn off gas, heat recovery ventilation and any fans ie Radon fans.
Move vehicles away from the house and close garage doors.
Move flammables away from the house.
Close all windows and ensure doors have no gaps to let embers in.
Remove all your deck furniture unless it’s metal. Store cushions inside the house.
Turn off, then remove the propane container from your BBQ and place 10 meters from the house. Be sure to also remove the flammable BBQ cover and store in the house.
Close all the doors inside your home to help prevent fire from spreading if it does enter your house.
Scan your important papers onto a hard drive and put in a safety deposit box or put papers into a fireproof container or leave with neighbours.
Have your home checked regularly by friends or get a house sitter as per your home insurance requirements.
If you have a sprinkler system set up and ready to go, neighbours may be able to start it if the need arises.
After following these steps, you can leave your home knowing you did the best you could to make it safe from a wildfire. Now head off and have a relaxing vacation!
